Oswestry magistrates court sits for last time
Tuesday 29th March 2011, 1:22PM BST.
Oswestry magistrates court sat for the final time today after it was selected for closure as part of Government spending cuts.
Five criminal and civil courts across Shropshire are to close as part of the cuts.
Zoe Campbell, spokeswoman for Her Majesty’s Courts Service, said: “Oswestry is having its last sitting today, but will not be officially closing until Friday.”
Oswestry magistrates, in Holbache Road, sat twice a week. Work will now be sent to Shrewsbury.
Kathryn Day, legal team manager at Oswestry, did not want to comment today.
The court building was originally a high school for boys. It stopped being an educational establishment when a schools reorganisation was carried out in the town and Oswestry High Schools merged in 1979.
Other courts in Shropshire due to close include Market Drayton and Ludlow.
An HMCS spokesperson said: “The Government is committed to supporting local justice, enabling justice to be done and be seen to be done in our communities.
“Closures will ultimately help to modernise and improve the use of courts in England and Wales.
“Keeping under-utilised courts open is simply not a good use of taxpayers’ money and resources must be targeted to best effect in order to provide value for money.”
