Warning over Oswestry charity conman
Monday 28th March 2011, 9:13AM BST.
An Oswestry market trader has warned about a conman who preyed on stallholders’ generosity when he claimed to be doing a sponsored event in memory of a son whom he said had died from leukaemia.
Joan Kirkham gave £15 to what she thought was a good cause but now believes went straight into the man’s pocket.
Police said today they were investigating the incident and urged people only to give to good causes they felt happy about.
Officers said they were called to the area of the town’s market on March 18 to reports that a man was claiming to be collecting for a sponsored event in memory of his son.
Mrs Kirkham, a market trader at the town’s indoor market, said: “He said his son had died last year and showed me a sponsor form that looked as if several other traders had given him £25 and £15.
“I gave him £15 but then speaking to stall holders afterwards it became obvious that he had altered the form.”
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call 0300 3333000.
