A man was injured after the car he was travelling in collided with a lamp-post and ended up in the back garden of a house in Shrewsbury today.

The man, who is believed to be in his early 20s, suffered a minor head injury after the crash which happened at about 6.20am in Roman Road.

The lamp-post was cordoned off by police after it was badly damaged in the incident. Engineers were on scene today ensuring it was safe and said it would need replacing.

David Everington, who lives in Kennedy Road, said the silver Peugeot 306 had hit the lamp-post and appeared to have spun into his back garden which fronts Roman Road.

He said: “At about 6.20am today we heard the shattering of glass. We thought at first that one of our windows had gone but then we realised this car had come off the road and hit a lamp-post.

“I don’t know how it came back and landed on our railings. It was only a few yards from my compost heap. When it first happened I went down there but there was no-one about.”

Mr Everington said he later saw a man, who looked to be in his early 20s, going back to the car. He said: “It was a young man who said it was his car. His face was lacerated, he had clearly been in an accident.”

Maria Wilkinson, spokesman for West Mercia Police, today said: “We were alerted at about 6.35am to a collision involving one vehicle, a silver Peugeot 306. The car had collided with a lamp-post and ended up against a fence in a garden. The lamp-post has been left at a dangerous angle. Shropshire Council’s highways department and electric engineers are in attendance.

“The driver was not at the scene when police arrived but has been traced and is receiving treatment at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for a minor head injury.”
