Officials at Shrewsbury Town Council today offered to take over the running of the town’s Quarry pool after it was axed from a package of county leisure facilities due to be outsourced.

Councillor Peter Nutting said the authority had been “kept in the dark” by Shropshire Council over the future of the site which had initially been in line for a multi-million pound revamp or sold to make way for a new build in another part of the town.

The unitary council had planned to offer the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre along with other leisure facilities such as the £10 million Sports Village in Sundorne and the Oswestry and Much Wenlock leisure centres as a package to be offered to a private management company to run on the council’s behalf.

But leisure chiefs have pulled the Quarry site from the deal and are not expected to look at it again for some time.

Councillor Nutting today urged Shropshire Council to consider offloading the site to the town council to take over. He said: “I think the town council has been kept in the dark about what goes on at Shropshire Council.

“The town council is not aware of any proposal for the swimming baths at all and we welcome discussions with Shropshire Council about the issue of the pool.

“We would look at any of the estates that Shropshire Council is not in a position to maintain and we would certainly offer to take over the management of sporting facilities in Shrewsbury.”

Shropshire Council has not yet commented on the claims.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said in January that a revamp or sale of the ageing public swimming pool had been shelved for up to five years. He said the site was not in danger but claimed if “major problems” arose it could have to close.

Surely we can create another tier of councillors all supported by the same taxpayers. Two is not enough.
Then all three could not talk to each other or maybe pass the buck, whichever is most usful.
