Oswestry leisure centre cafe plea refused

Campaigners have lost their battle to have a cafe built in Oswestry’s new £8 million leisure centre.

More than 1,000 people signed up to a petition calling for Shropshire Council to include a cafe in the build programme for the Shrewsbury Road leisure facility, due to open in the summer.

They said the cafe at Oswestry’s current leisure centre was a well used facility and the new leisure centre should also have one.

But despite the petition, council chiefs said no cafe will be built at the centre.

Councillor Steve Charmley said the decision was due to financial constraints.

“There will be space left for a cafe to be built and it will be up to whoever wins the contract to operate the leisure centre to decide whether they want to put in a cafe.”
