Telford council approves £10m roads improvements

A £10 million package to fund roads improvements including new bridges, lighting and footpaths over the next 12 months has been approved by Telford & Wrekin Council.

The authority’s cabinet last night unanimously voted in favour of the major investment, clearing the way for workers to start tackling some of the borough’s worst roads.

Cabinet members confirmed resurfacing projects will see £260,000 spent on Hall Park Way in the town centre, £100,000 on the Cock Hotel junction in Wellington and £207,000 on Wombridge Road in Trench.

There will also be £500,000 spent on providing clearer signs and road markings and removing unnecessary street clutter, after a public consultation pinpointed these as popular areas for investment.

Councillor Adrian Lawrence, cabinet member for environment and rural, said: “The proposal is to spend just over £9 million of new money and when combined with £1 million that couldn’t be spent over the winter due to severe weather, we’ll have £10 million for the coming year.

“We have traditionally under-invested in signs and lines in Telford and that has often let the roads down and given the impression of roads being in a run-down position when that wasn’t technically correct.

“We need large scale investment to gradually improve highways and tackle potholes which are clearly a danger to residents.”

Mr Lawrence added: “I would like to highlight the four years of under investment by the previous administration and that this represents a 28 per cent increase in capital spending.

“I believe that shows our commitment to what is one of the highest areas of residents’ concern.”
