Shropshire streets plan Royal Wedding parties

People across Shropshire will celebrate Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in style at more than a dozen street parties taking place throughout the county.

Council chiefs today confirmed 14 street parties will be held in the county on April 29. Telford & Wrekin Council has given the go-ahead for five applications to close roads for patriotic parties to take place.

Celebrations are planned in Leegomery, Stirchley and Apley while two will be held in Madeley.

Shropshire Council today confirmed it has approved nine bids to hold on-street celebrations, including four in Shrewsbury, four in villages near the town and one in Bridgnorth.

The locations of street parties are being withheld as councils fear large crowds of revellers could swamp small community parties if they are widely advertised.

Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for transport and IT, said he was pleased with the number of parties. He said: “It gives Shropshire people the chance to let their hair down on what it is obviously going to be such a big national celebration.

“I had no expectation of how many we would get, but I think nine is good. I imagine lots of people will be having parties in their gardens or down at their local pubs.”

Russell Griffin, spokes- man for Telford & Wrekin Council, said it had not been aiming for a specific target.

But he added: “We are anticipating similar applications for Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee in 2012 so this has been a useful dry run in establishing the processes, as it’s not often we get these kind of applications.”

The deadline for street closure applications was Friday. Both councils had promised to do their best to allow parties to happen.
