Letter: Building more offices when so many lie empty
Tuesday 22nd March 2011, 6:00AM GMT.
Letter: As a user of the Shrewsbury Business Park I am concerned that yet another green field space is to be used to build offices to house another potential one thousand people with jobs. With so many brown sites and empty offices around the town one has to question the competence of the planners.
Also, unknown to a lot of taxpayers, a number of the existing buildings on this site are occupied by Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council staff.
You have to ask the question why when they are indicating that the Guildhall is to be sold off as surplus to requirements – yet another exercise in wasting money.
For those of us that use this park we all know of the parking difficulties, there is no worthwhile public transport access, so with the potential of an additional thousand cars, plus extra service vehicles where are we all to park?
It would be good if the planners had the gumption to explain the reasoning behind their planning strategy within the former SABC boundary

I agree wholeheartly with these comments, but not only are there empty offices in Shrewsbury, look at Telford……so many empty commercial premises and unlikely to be significant take up in the medium term. High rents and rates, a lack of goverment incentives and bank reluctance to lend to business is a real killer for economic revival.

Shrewsbury Business Park is nearly entirely government now…
The police even have offices there, oops – not allowed to say that apparently…

isn’t it a way of creating brown sites for the future ?

I’ve worked with many governments both national and local and I’ve got to admit Shropshire Council is one of the most inept and bizarre I’ve ever experienced. They should be filling these voids and protecting the green fields, sadly they seem hellbent on pointless over development which I fear will destroy the quality of life and land in Salop.

The whole point of that business park and the stadium was to enclose land for future housebuilding proposals.
Some of the architecture there is innovative and attractive but I can guess that the new houses will not be of a similar interesting and modern design standard.

Somebody needs to do a bit more digging around… Shrewsbury has “growth point” status – Check the Core strategy on the shropshire council website. A further 6000 dwellings are to be built by 2026 and around 90hectares (c235acres) of employment land brought forwards. The development and extension of the Shrewsbury Business Park has been in the various local development plans since the mid 1990′s.
