Fears for Wellington Carnival’s future
Tuesday 22nd March 2011, 11:08AM GMT.
A Shropshire carnival which is attended by thousands of people a year could be cancelled unless new committee members can be found to help organise the event, it was claimed today.
Wellington Carnival, which raises hundreds of pounds for county charities, is due to take place on June 25 at The Bowling Park.
But committee chairman Brian Harpham said unless more volunteers could be found the event would be scrapped.
He said: “Lots of plans and ideas are in place, the venue is booked, the insurance is being sorted out. We’ve been able to run a really good big event for the town, attracting crowds of 2,500 people to it.
“It’s been great, but it’s impossible to organise with just two people. If we don’t get more people we won’t be able to have a carnival this year. We want people who just want to get stuck in. It will take a couple of hours a week.”
When the carnival was revived in 2003, the committee had about 20 people but by 2007 it was down to just six. This year the committee has just two members.
“Just four remained last year and the event only went ahead thanks to help from the Church of Latter Day Saints in the town, staff and students from Wrekin College and volunteers on the day,” said Mr Harpham.
