Man arrested after Telford house fire

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after fire crews spent almost two-and-a-half hours tackling a blaze at a Shropshire home.

Police today confirmed a man in his 30s was in custody and being questioned about the fire at a home in Lord Murray Drive, Woodside, Telford, last night.

Two fire engines from Tweedale Fire Station, another from Telford and an officer from Shrewsbury were called to the rubbish fire which had been started inside the front entrance to the house at 11.10pm.

Tweedale watch manager Matthew Lamb said: “It wasn’t a very big fire to be honest, but the house was smoke-logged.

“It didn’t take long to put it out.

“We are not entirely sure if people were inside the house when it started, but no-one was inside when we arrived.”

Firefighters tackled flames for 15 minutes and used a thermal imaging camera to check for further fires inside the building.

They remained at the scene for a further two hours to remove the smoke from inside the house and a fire investigation officer was due to attend the property today.

All the damage was caused inside the house.

Denise Wakefield, spokeswoman for Telford police, appealed for anyone with information to call 03003 333000.
