Shropshire gets some Comic Relief

Do you want to walk up and down the Wrekin for nine hours straight?
That is what two Shropshire children are planning to do as they join thousands of people across the county in their bid to raise thousands of pounds for Comic Relief today.
Little Hatty, 11, and Bethany Davies, 14, from Wellington in Telford, will take to the foot of the Wrekin on Sunday with five other friends and continuously walk up and down the 1,335ft hill to raise cash.
Meanwhile, traders at Shrewsbury’s indoor Market Hall proved they have a nose for fundraising as they got in the charity spirit for Red Nose Day.

A whole host of fundraising activities will be taking place, including the sale of specially made Red Nose Day gingerbread men from bakers TO Williams and a market-wide “round up to a pound” campaign.
Kate Gittins, site facilities manager at the market hall said: “We will be getting into the spirit of Comic Relief with a host of special activities planned throughout the day so come along and join in the fun.”
Also in Shrewsbury, the Kids Club at Welti Health & Fitness have created biscuits, cakes and buns, to raise funds.
Club co-ordinator Jemma Vickers said: “We are also holding a name the bear competition to win a teddy bear kindly donated by Merrythought of Ironbridge.”
Staff and students at Greenfields Primary School, in Hemsworth Way, Shrewsbury will be having a ghoulish time today as they dress up for a monster themed Red Nose Day.
Maria Moore, administrator, said they hoped to raise hundreds of pounds for charity. “We are having a monster red nose day and a lot of the pupils and staff, who always enter into everything, having made their own outfits.
“As with many schools we are getting right into the thick of it, with lots of bright colours and face painting.”
Not to be outdone, Oswestry’s biggest ever Zumba class will be held from 6.30pm-midnight to raise money.
The latest fitness craze is sweeping the country and The Venue at Park Hall has teamed up with Susie Q and her Zumba team for the Comic Relief Fitness Party.
Sarah Cleaton from the Venue said: “We are urging people to come along and join in the Zumba night for Comic Relief.
“We hope people will stay on afterwards for entertainment from top local singer, Molly Griffiths, and a drink,” she added.

Youngsters at the Meadows Primary School in Oswestry dressed in their pyjamas to raise funds and were due to stage a talent show this afternoon.
And for two pupils, Amy Rowley, 11, and Kirsty Jones, 10, it was going to be a very quiet day by holding a day of silence.
“We will still be able to take part in lessons and enjoy playtimes and lunchtime,” said Amy, who explained they would use whiteboards to ask and answer questions.
Pyjamas were also the dress code for the 50 staff who work at Practice Plan in Oswestry.
Holly Venning, from the practice, said: “Year on year we sponsor Comic Relief, always trying to do something new and something that all our staff can get involved with.”
At The Style Court salon in Wilkinson Walk, Market Drayton, staff and customers got into the spirit of Comic Relief by donning red noses and collecting donations.
Manager Bridget Kirk said: “Some of the clients wore red noses as they had their hair cut.”
Also in Market Drayton, Culina Logistics, Muller’s transport division, wore, red noses and drove lorries with Comic Relief branding. And Style Court hairdressers, will also don red noses.
Also hoping to add to tonight’s total, two florists in Much Wenlock decided to shed all their petals in aid of the charity.

Pupils and teachers at Moor Park School in Richards Castle, near Ludlow, were re-enacting Benny Hill comedy scenes this morning and had already raised £500.
Kathryn Evans, school marketing manager, said the idea had been inspired by year seven pupil Gracie Wackett who wanted to do something wacky after watching a Comic Relief programme.
Tennis players in south Shropshire are hoping to create a different type of racket by tickling people’s funny bones.
Members of Border Nomads Tennis Club will take to High Street in Bishop’s Castle today aiming to tell 1,000 jokes.
Club member Heather Ashton said: “As tennis players we are not famous for telling jokes and not all of the jokes will make everyone laugh, but we’ll be doing our best. Any budding comics who want to lend a hand can join in to keep the jokes flowing.”
The team will start telling jokes outside the pharmacy on High Street from 10am.
Schools across Mid Wales are also getting into the swing of things, hoping to raise plenty of money for the charity event.
Children at Ardwyn Infants School in Welshpool are holding a “funny hair” day with children coming in wearing wigs or with funny styles.
Meanwhile, Montgomery Primary School children will be dressing up and buying special cakes, while Treowen Primary School pupils in Newtown will dress up and take part in various activities.
