Oswestry traders in roadworks plea

Traders on two Oswestry streets hit by roadworks are appealing to shoppers not to ignore them.

Leg Street and Beatrice Street have been closed to vehicle traffic for three weeks because of work to replace ageing water pipes running under the town.

And although the shopkeepers are full of praise for the contractors they say their shops are noticeably quieter than usual. One owner said she could not have chosen a worse time to open her fashion store.

Debbie Bright opened her Look In Good store, in Leg Street, earlier this month.

“People are just not walking down the road,” she said. “One day this week I didn’t have one customer.”

Martin Britten, from Martin Britten’s clothing in Leg Street, said there were fewer people around, but said: “I can not fault the workmen, they have been fantastic,”

A worker from the Sissy Blu store, in Beatrice Street, said there had been fewer shoppers since the roadworks, which are due to continue until next month.
