25,000-signature hospital petition to be handed in to Shrewsbury MP
Friday 18th March 2011, 11:22AM GMT.
Campaigners fighting to save women and children’s services at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital were today due to hand over a petition with 25,000 signatures to a county MP.
Martyn Davies-Friend, along with his wife Alison and others have led a protest group against the plans for a shake-up of health services in the county by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.
A cross-border petition signed by more than 30,000 people from across both Shropshire and Mid Wales was handed into officials at Shropshire County PCT on Monday.
Mr Davies-Friend said a large bulk of them were copies of ones he said were to be presented to Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski at his constituency office at 11.30am today.
The petition which has gained an extra 2,000 signatures since the hospital consultation finished on Mon- day, will be handed by Mr Kawczynski to health ministers at Westminster shortly.
Mr Davies-Friend said it had been a great effort from everyone and showed the strength of opposition to the trust’s plans.
He said: “Effectively it will be the Shropshire portion of the petition that was handed into the PCT. They had a copy of the Shropshire portion and the originals from the Welsh side. We’ve got about 25,000 signatures.
“The one that went to the PCT had over 33,000 signatures, which was fantastic.”
He urged decision-makers to reject the trust’s plans to make Telford’s Princess Royal the centre for women and children’s services.
