100 Telford council staff take voluntary redundancy
Friday 18th March 2011, 11:25AM GMT.
Telford & Wrekin Council has approved just under 100 voluntary redundancies since the turn of the year, it has been revealed.
Council bosses say the redundancies are part of the 530 posts which are expected to go between now and April 2012.
They have blamed cuts totalling £25 million over the next four years for the job losses, which have been made across the council including management positions.
Russell Griffin, a council spokesman, said they had started a comprehensive re-structuring programme.
Russell Griffin, a council spokesman, said they had started a comprehensive re-structuring programme.
He said: “This council faces grant cuts of £13.6 million next year and a total of £25 million over the next four years.
“We simply cannot make those sort of savings without reducing the number of staff we employ.
“We have been honest with our employees about this and have estimated that around 530 posts could go between now and April 2012.
“We had already commenced a programme of re-structuring in the knowledge that times would be tough – for instance we have already halved senior management posts.”
Council bosses say by squeezing recruitment and redeploying staff a number of positions have been saved from the axe and efforts are being made to avoid enforced redundancies.
