Telford is to get a huge multi-screen cinema as part of the town’s £250 million Southwater development.

The news was revealed by Telford & Wrekin Council leader Andrew Eade today at a topping out ceremony marking the beginning of work on the roof of the town’s International Centre as part of the scheme.

The cinema, described as one that would compete on a national level, will most likely be built on a site behind the town’s shopping centre.

Mr Eade said: “We have been talking to operators of multi-screen cinema complexes for some time and it has become very apparent they are extremely keen to have a presence with all the other developments taking place at the moment.

“We are going to go to the market very shortly.

“This will be a first rate complex and we are looking for something that makes a national statement about Telford.

“It needs to be bigger than the existing cinema as we are talking about the potential for additional 200,000 visitors to Telford when work is complete and we need to make sure that when people visit we have the right sort of facilities for them to enjoy.”

The redevelopment of the Southwater area is designed to improve Telford’s night-time economy. It will also include a large number of homes, offices and shops.

Gold-class screens, like the ones at Star City, please. That might just tempt me to go to the cinema.

Oh dear – eade clearly using the southwater development as his pet – his done nothing in the council so has to tag himself to this private sector scheme

this has been on eades books since 2007, there is also talk of a water world type complex, that came straight from the leader himself.
