A public inquiry to decide the fate of a controversial proposed £60 million incinerator in Shrewsbury is expected to last 12 days, officials said today.

The Planning Inspectorate said the appeal against the decision by Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee to refuse planning permission for the burner at Battlefield, would start at 10am on September 27 at the council chambers at the Shirehall.

The inspector will be Alan Boyland and he is due to give his decision by December 2 this year.

Interested parties have until April 7 to submit any comments.

Veolia announced plans to appeal against the decision made by the council’s committee last September.

The company said it believed it had a “strong” application and was determined to get the decision made by Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee last September overturned.

The planning committee rejected the plans after members said it was unacceptable to have a mass burner as this had been excluded in the local waste plan.
