Ex-WI Shropshire chairman dies after fall in New Zealand

A Shropshire woman has died two weeks after hitting her head in a fall while on holiday in New Zealand.

Christine Marsh, 79, of Walford Heath near Baschurch, had been in a coma in a Dunedin Hospital since the incident while on her annual winter visit to friends.

Her daughter Judith flew out immediately and was there when her mother died.

A London-based professor of haematology, she will be back at the family home in Shropshire this weekend and Mrs Marsh’s body will be flown home next week. A long-time Women’s Institute member, Mrs Marsh had been the organisation’s county chairman and involved in all aspects of WI work.

She was part of the farming world for many years, was a member of Shrewsbury Flower Show and a keen supporter and steward at the West Mid Show as well as being a respected senior magistrate.

Her son Viv who runs a plant and nursery business at Walford Heath, also flew to his mother’s bedside and returned this week. He said today: “Of course we are all so very sad. But we knew there was no chance of recovery for mum and she slipped away peacefully in a most beautiful part of the world surrounded by her good friends. It was a great comfort to see and all of us are so very grateful for that.”

Younger daughter Ursula who lives in Shrewsbury, was working with her brother and sister to co-ordinate their mother’s safe passage home which had been planned for this weekend.
