A49 footbridge plan for new Ludlow hospital
Thursday 17th March 2011, 3:29PM GMT.
A pedestrian bridge should be built across the A49 to help people access Ludlow’s new £27 million hospital, it has been claimed.
Members of Ludlow Town Council suggested the idea as a way to help ease traffic congestion and pressure on routes leading to the planned hospital at Ludlow Eco-Business Park.
They have also raised concerns over the impact the development could have on the nearby Park and Ride site with the potential for parking spaces to be lost.
But councillors indicated they are supportive of the plans to build the new hospital.
Outline plans for the scheme will go before Shropshire Council’s south planning committee at a meeting at Ludlow Town Football Club’s SBS Stadium on Tuesday.
A report to members states: “Ludlow Town Council supports the principle of the development but raised concerns regarding the impact on the existing Park and Ride facility and the provision of a pharmacy within the development and the potential impact on pharmacies in the town centre.
“Members also suggested that a pedestrian bridge walkway may be necessary over the A49.”

There’s absolutely no chance of funding a foot bridge. A previous attempt to get a pedestrian bridge installed near the new Rock Green housing development, where many young families live today, also fell flat on its face.
The site chosen for the “hospital” (in truth, it’s a a care home with a surgery) is the most inconvenient part of town for pedestrians. Hidden on the very outskirts of town, approached on foot over a very busy trunk road, and tucked in the very farthest corner of a semi-redundant business park.
A mindless choice of location, but then this had less to do with healthcare, and much more to do with the lucrative PFI building contract, worth £25m to the bankers. Some people are going to become very rich from this.

Surely most people will travel there by car or bus. For those who don’t why can’t they use the pedestrian crossing used daily by all of those who work on the Eco Park, why is a bridge needed?
