Shrewsbury Hope House charity bags stolen
Tuesday 15th March 2011, 7:24PM GMT.
Thieves stole charity bags from a Shrewsbury street destined for a charity which cares for terminally-ill children, police have revealed today.
The bags for Hope House Children’s Hospice were taken from Leyburn Avenue, in Copthorne, by individuals who allegedly turned up in a grey van.
A resident in the street, who did not want to be named, said: “People in the Copthorne Park area of Shrewsbury left the red Hope House bags outside their homes for collection on Friday morning.
“Several of these red bags were stolen from outside our houses by callous thieves in a grey van. How any human being can steal from any charity is beyond us and to steal from a children’s charity is totally beyond belief.
“Let’s hope these criminals can be swiftly brought to justice.”
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, today said: “We did receive two complaints on Friday morning from residents in Leyburn Avenue that a man in a vehicle had collected Hope House charity bags from their door steps.
“On checking with the charity, the residents established it was a bogus collector. They reported the theft to the police and the information has been passed to the local policing team covering Bowbrook and Porthill who are making further inquiries.
“Our general advice is that if you suspect charity bags are being stolen do contact police on 0300 333 3000.”
Shirley McCann, trading administrator for Hope House, which has a hospice near Oswestry, today said that the charity had suffered a number of thefts of charity bags in the past.
She said: “It’s a very difficult thing to stop.”
