Letter: In praise of police stop and search
Tuesday 15th March 2011, 6:00AM GMT.
Letter: A recent Star item “Father’s anger over stop and search” outlined a town councillor’s complaint that his son, aged 15, and a group of his friends were stopped by police while walking to an AFC Telford game. Apparently one was searched and they were all directed away from the ground.
While this group were apparently doing nothing wrong, the problem is that a group of similar aged youths have recently caused difficulties at several games.
Even though the problem is only small-scale, their actions are resulting in a less welcoming atmosphere for our travelling fans at some away grounds and are causing extra stewarding and policing costs for the club.
For the moment, as a fan I’m therefore pleased to learn the police are checking out any groups of unsupervised youngsters heading to a match.
Indeed, I’d like to encourage any parents who have teenagers attending games with their mates to tag on occasionally just to reassure themselves that the group head straight home after each game and don’t hang around looking for trouble.

No problems with the stop and search, but why were they refused from going onto the ground and game, if they had broken any laws surely they would have been arrested,

Would the letter writer have been so happy if it had happened to him. No problem with stop and search, but why turn the lads away after nothing was found? And why have young people got to head straight home after a game?

What is relevant about the lad having a town councillor as his father, does that not suggest he feels he should have been treated differently?

So if the police were stopping and searching overweight, middle aged, slightly balding men and turning them away from football games, Woukd that be ok?

Marg: No one said that. No need for such a narrow-minded comment.
One can only presume you read the daily mail with comments like that.
They should not of been turned away when found to of had nothing on them that they were not allowed to and were not doing anything wrong.
Should take this up with the police and club if it happens again.

Driving passed the crowds going to the match leads me to think I’ve described the average fan. So if the letter writer is happy about teenage boys being targeted, I would like to know how he feels about the average fan getting that kind of treatment. And what has my comment got to do with the DM?
