Arriva to raise single bus fares in Shropshire

Arriva today announced plans to raise single bus fares in Shropshire – with 30p added to some journeys. Passengers in Shrewsbury, Telford, Bridgnorth and Oswestry will be hit.

Most of the price hikes will cost an extra 10p or 20p for a single journey.

Bosses at the bus company today said increasing costs had forced them to pass on the increase to customers.

The maximum child single fare of £1.40 will no longer be available after Saturday, with fare increases in place on Sunday.

Shrewsbury will see a new £1.80 flat-fare introduced for the town area while the rest of its single fares, from £2.40 upwards, will be increased by 20p.

The biggest increase will be in Bridgnorth where some customers will see their £1.30 single fare increased to £1.60.

Fare increases across Bridgnorth will vary between 10p and 30p.

In Telford, increases will be between 10p and 20p for its single fares.

In Oswestry, some fares will also go up by 10p or 20p, while others will be reduced.

Customers paying between £2.20 and £2.50 in Oswestry, for example, will now pay a flat charge of £2.40.

Keith Myatt, communications manager for Arriva Midlands, said single fares had not been revised since May 2009. He said some single fares remained unchanged or had actually reduced in price.

He added: “We have tried hard to keep fare increases to a minimum.

“However we have reached the point where it is inevitable that we must pass on some of the additional costs to customers.

They’ve also changed the Shrewsbury to Telford bus times to every 2 hours. What a rip off. Dirty buses and drivers lacking in any customer care. Time to get on yer bikes folks!

Nice to see them ploughing the 2.7 million of council tax payers money they just got for the sale of the depot in Shrewsbury back in to public service. nice one Arriva. Not!

The increase has already been introduced and it was done so last month, unless they are bringing in another one on top of the increase already in place. I’m a regular user of the buses in telford and i noticed an increase last month. Fare increases on the journeys i take were either 10p or 20p.

To the boneheads who run Arriva, a little tip:
Put your fares DOWN and more people will use your service.
More people at a little less profit means you would make more money than these increases will generate.
