RAF Cosford’s Wellington Bomber restoration revealed

Saturday 12th March 2011, 12:38PM GMT.

The frame of the Vickers Wellington Bomber has been stripped down for restoration

These pictures show the ongoing restoration of an iconic Battle of Britain bomber which is taking place at a Shropshire airbase.

The bomber's nose gun turret

The Vickers Wellington Bomber, one of the last few remaining, was transported to RAF Cosford in July last year and has become one of the biggest restoration projects the airbase has ever attempted.

Bosses at the on-site conservation centre say to celebrate the Wellington project they will hold an open week allowing visitors to the base behind the scenes access.

Conservation centre manager Tim Wallis said the open week will run from Monday to Saturday.

Mr Wallis urged everyone to come along to the centre to experience Britain’s aviation history being brought back to life.

He said: “The Cosford museum conservation centre is not routinely open to the public.

“Yet everyone who does gain access has invariably left with a smile and much enthusiasm for the work that we do here.

The 'skin' has been taken off the wings

“I urge anyone who has not been to an open week before, to seize this opportunity to visit and experience our aviation heritage for themselves.

“Come and savour the atmosphere that surrounds these historic and iconic aircraft.”

Mr Wallis added visitors would be able to speak to staff about the Wellington as well as view other projects currently ongoing such as the Handley Page Hampden TB1 and Spitfire Mk XIX.

Entry into the open week and museum is free.

“For more information call the museum on (01902) 376200.
