Sat nav leads to Pant lorry trap
Friday 11th March 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
A lorry driver was stuck on a narrow Shropshire lane for about 10 hours after ending up in a ditch when he followed his sat nav down the road.
The large truck, which is believed to have been on loan from Salford Van Hire, became stuck at the side of a small lane in Pant, near Oswestry, yesterday.
The driver was on his way to Oswestry when the lorry first became stuck at about 5am. Villager Andy Cumine said a farmer tried to help free the lorry with his tractor but was unable to.
“A farmer tried to help him but then it backed into a stream. It looked like he was going to tip over,” he said.
“It doesn’t happen up the lane very often but the driver said the sat nav took him up there.”
An emergency call was sent to Enfield Recovery, based in Llanymynech, to help out at about 9.30am yesterday.
Harold Percival, senior manager, said: “What tends to happen is they follow the infamous sat nav and I think this is what has happened in this incident. It was going to Oswestry and went into the ditch.”
Mr Percival said the lorry ran into a problem while trying to get free, resulting in a burst airbag on its suspension. Workers had to carry out repairs before freeing the lorry, which was eventually released using Enfield Recovery’s special equipment and was on its way to Oswestry by 3pm.
Mr Percival said his employees were trained to deal with such circumstances.
Salford Van Hire did not want to comment.
