Shropshire-based soldier killed in Afghanistan blast
Thursday 10th March 2011, 8:19AM GMT.
A Shropshire-based soldier was killed in southern Afghanistan when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb, the Ministry of Defence said.
The soldier, from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, based at Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, was on an operation to disrupt insurgent activity in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand Province when he was caught in the blast yesterday afternoon.
Next of kin have been informed.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Eastman, said: “It is my sad duty to announce the loss of a soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment this afternoon.
“The soldier was participating in an operation to disrupt insurgent activity in the Nad-e Ali North area of Helmand Province when his vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device.
“The soldier gave his life pursuing peace and stability for a people that had been dominated by insurgent subjugation, threats and intimidation.
“We vow to carry on his vital work in the face of such cowardly and indiscriminate attacks.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this deeply sad time.”
