First meeting over Shropshire and Powys 999 times
Thursday 10th March 2011, 6:00PM GMT.
Campaigners calling for improved ambulance response times in rural areas of Shropshire and Powys have held their first meeting with health bosses.
Concerned councillors and residents met representatives of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, West Midlands Ambulance Service and Wales Ambulance Service.
Fears have been raised that ambulance response times could be even more critical if a proposed reconfiguration of Shropshire hospital services goes ahead.
Under plans which are currently out to public consultation, neo-natal and maternity services would be moved from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, while the RSH would become the major centre for acute surgery.
Heather Kidd, Shropshire councillor for Chirbury and Worthen, said: “Ambulance response times both sides of the border are not good in many areas.
Wyn Williams, Liberal Democrat Assembly candidate for Montgomeryshire, said: “We have a long border and frequently rely on each other’s ambulance services for the quickest response.”
Adam Cairns, chief executive of the hospital trust who chaired the meeting, said the issue had been raised at many public meetings and would need to be addressed regardless of the proposed hospital reforms.
