Road hit by seven-foot hole to stay shut
Wednesday 9th March 2011, 11:29AM GMT.
A Shropshire road where a seven-foot hole opened up which a two-tonne truck plunged into will be closed to drivers for at least the next three days.
Two brothers who were in the 4×4 truck had a lucky escape when they leapt from the vehicle just seconds before it nose-dived into a hole on the A464 at Boningale, near Albrighton, on Monday night.
The hole was caused by a burst pipe on Monday afternoon, which also left homes and schools without water.
The two schools were expected to open to pupils again today but Shropshire Council said the road was likely to be shut until Friday.
It came as council bosses said Phoenix Bank in Market Drayton was due to reopen today after being closed for three months to allow major repair work to be carried out.
The road has been closed since January 10 to enable repairs to part of a wall in front of the Old Grammar School garden, which suffered from a landslip more than 12 months ago.
The work had originally been due to be finished at the beginning of this month, but was put back after engineers discovered the damage to the wall was worse than first thought.
Gareth Proffitt, a council spokesman, said today: “Shropshire Council’s contractor has been able to complete work sooner than originally anticipated.”
