New Oswestry nightclub to open next month

Wednesday 9th March 2011, 2:00PM GMT.

A new Oswestry nightclub which bosses say will “revitalise the town’s nightlife” is expected to open next month, creating about seven new jobs.

The former Fitz’s building, in Cross Street, is currently undergoing a major facelift ready to open as a venue for clubbers.

Bosses claim it will draw in visitors from the surrounding area.

Paul Fitton, manager, said: “It will be different to anywhere. It is a nightclub with a difference.”

Mr Fitton said the club would be separated into two areas. The main room, called Desire, will provide dance music and a second bar, called Essence, will provide 1970s and 1980s music.

He said a “significant” amount of money had been spent on the revamp which includes lighting similar to that used in large Birmingham clubs.

He said: “We have state-of-the-art lighting and there is nothing like it in Shrewsbury or Wrexham. I don’t know how much we are spending on the revamp but it is a significant amount to bring it up to date.”

It is hoped the nightspot will be officially opened by a top DJ on April 3.

Licence holder Lorraine Pickstock has applied to Shropshire Council for the building to be able to be open from 10am until 12.30am Mondays to Wednesdays, from 10am until 3.30am on Thursdays and Fridays, from 10am until 4.30am on Saturdays and from 12pm until 2.30am on Sundays.

Mr Fitton said: “The area is a builder’s site at the moment, even though it is only three weeks until it opens, but it is coming together really fast. Hopefully it will revitalise Oswestry’s night scene.”

There are plans to open the club during the day as a cafe and it could also be used as a function room.
