Welshpool one-way system hailed a success
Tuesday 8th March 2011, 2:49PM GMT.
Welshpool’s controversial one-way system has been hailed a success by civic leaders, who today said initial problems had now been ironed out.
Councillor Estelle Bleivas, town mayor, said the system – which had come under criticism from motorists and business when it opened – was now working to plan.
She said once the works had been completed fully by the weekend the scheme would be working perfectly.
“I am so pleased that for the last few days the one-way system has been running spot on,” she said. “There were some problems to begin with and people did complain, but the work was still being completed but we are nearly there now and people’s attitudes are changing.
“Motorists understand the system now and it is wonderful.”
Workmen have been finalising signage, resurfacing and constructing traffic islands this week in preparation for the opening of the new Tesco store on Monday.
Councillor Alan Crowe added: “We had a lot of criticism as a town council when the system opened, a lot of it was uncalled for, but things are now settling down and I think working okay.”
