£45m scheme will transform Telford’s Woodside estate
Tuesday 8th March 2011, 7:04PM GMT.
A Telford housing estate is to be transformed by a £45 million scheme which will see new shops and homes being built, it was revealed today.
The plans for Woodside, submitted by The Wrekin Housing Trust, are now awaiting approval by planners at the borough council.
Council chiefs said the cash had been raised in partnership with the housing trust and Advantage West Midlands.
Work in the area began last year, but the latest phase will include a new local centre, demolition of outdated buildings to improve the estate and two new shops.
The transformation will also include 21 new homes.
Planning permission has already been granted to allow improvements to the Wildwood and Woodrows area, including new parking spaces, street lighting, road resurfacing and repairs to garages.
The demolition of 40 homes in Wildwood was also given the go ahead.
Rough Park House, a derelict listed building on Woodside Avenue, is also up for renovation.
Eric Carter, cabinet member for housing and regeneration at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We are committed to regenerating historic town centres across the borough and also Telford’s new town estates.
“This is clearly demonstrated by the work that we are doing in Woodside.
“It is all excellent news for the estate and it will be a much more pleasant and enjoyable environment to live in once all the work is completed.
“The work will not just stop at Woodside either.
“We have already worked with partners to regenerate Madeley, are currently working on schemes for Sutton Hill and have future plans for Brookside as well.”

Work in the area began last year? Tut tut Star reporter, where have you been? This has been going on for years.
I’m happy for Woodside residents (if they are happy) with these improvements – but I cannot fathom why Sutton Hill, similar age, much more dilapidated, is largely left to rot.

How much more money and revamps of Woodside are we going to have before the authorities realise that this estate should be bulldozed and a totally new approach taken with regards to affordable & social housing in Telford?

….. £45 million sounds like an obscene amount of money. Will making it look pretty solve the social problems in Woodside?

The flats in your photo were demolished years ago.
I’ve got to say that the improvements so far seem to have been a success, but as Kath mentioned, it doesn’t seem fair that Sutton Hill, an estate that is several years older and of poorer original construction, has been pretty much left to rot.
I believe Woodside was originally given priority because it ticked the right boxes when it came to indices of deprivation, poor health, crime etc.

Not only were the flats demolished years ago the replacement houses have already been built.
I’m all in favour of recycling but there can’t be much going on if you have to repeat a 2008 story.

I could greatly improve the area of woodside with a 10p box of matches!
