Shrewsbury church on TV’s Songs of Praise
Monday 7th March 2011, 2:20PM GMT.
Shropshire parishioners hit the high notes on TV in an episode of Songs of Praise filmed at locations across the county.
The Sunday show on BBC1 saw hundreds of Shropshire folk packed into St Peter’s Church, in Cound, near Shrewsbury, in a performance recorded last year.
It featured as the special Lent edition.
Presenter Pam Rhodes found out what people were giving up for Lent as well as discovering the origins of the season.
She said: “In rural communities like this beautiful one in Shropshire, Lent has long been important on the Christian calendar, so let’s join the congregation here at the parish church of St Peter Cound as they recall the wondrous story of Christ’s life on earth.”
Professor Thomas O’Loughlin, from the University of Nottingham, was interviewed in Shrewsbury Catholic Cathedral while the town’s St Chad’s Church also featured in the show.
Producers praised the generosity of Shropshire residents when they turned out in force for the filming.
