Workers lose jobs after Telford council axes contract
Friday 4th March 2011, 2:19PM GMT.
More than a dozen workers from a Shropshire company have lost their jobs after a council contract worth £700,000 was scrapped.
Sixteen workers at Telford and Wrekin Services in Donnington were told yesterday their last day at the company would be April 8.
The firm, which carries out maintenance work for Telford & Wrekin Council, made 10 employees redundant while a further six took voluntary redundancy.
Adrian Collins, area director for Telford and Wrekin Services, said the company deeply regretted letting staff go but added the job losses came after Telford & Wrekin Council chopped its maintenance contract to the tune of £700,000.
One worker, who did not want to be named, said there was shock among some staff who did not expect to be let go.
“Some people I have spoken to are absolutely gobsmacked,” he said.
Russell Griffin, spokes- man for Telford & Wrekin Council, confirmed the authority had reduced its maintenance payout to the company by £700,000.
