Letter: Even doctors are concerned over Shropshire hospital plans

Letter: I attended the debate on “the future of hospital services in Shropshire” and it is noticeable how everyone is far more knowledgeable about what is proposed and even the doctors are now expressing serious concerns.

Several senior children’s consultant doctors stood up and opposed the plans.

I hope their views will be listened to and alternative options can be looked at.

I think everyone accepts there should be a single consultant maternity and paediatric unit to cover Shropshire and Mid Wales and that the current maternity unit in Shrewsbury is reaching the end of its time.

Nearly everyone accepts risks to pregnant mothers with complications and young children in need of emergency care will increase if the plans are accepted.

Moving these important services to Telford at the eastern extreme of the area they cover simply creates too much additional risk.

I would like to see a “plan B” showing consultant maternity and paediatric services in the main hospital buildings at Shrewsbury and all adult services re-organised over the two sites, with perhaps one site having most adult surgical work and the other specialising more in medical care.

Councillor Nutting clearly doesn’t care about the risk to either medical or surgical patients – odd, given that they are old enough to vote for (or against) him

The reality of any split is that all reap the benefits of single site quality and the reduction in transfers further East – and some from every area will pay a price in increasrd travel

You could invert the trusts plan – and make shrewsbury women and children, and telford the main surgical centre – but while the benefits are similar, the costs (in death and disability) are higher
