The Wakeman School in Shrewsbury faces closure

A closure-threatened Shrewsbury school is set to be lit up to try to help save it from the axe, campaigners said today. Wakeman School is on Shropshire Council’s hit list, with plans out to consultation.

But former school governor Andy McKeown, who has designed some of Blackpool’s illuminations, said today he hoped lighting up the school would raise the profile of the campaign to save it.

The message “WWW.Why WasteWakeman?” will be beamed onto the school on March 17.

The 58-year-old from Belle Vue, whose two sons both went to Wakeman, said: “There’s a lot of support from people who have been to the school and it just seems so pointless to close it.”

The school is on a hit list of nine schools across the county set to be closed by Shropshire Council.

Meanwhile, teachers from a village school near Oswestry have discovered they could be made redundant if school merger proposals go ahead.

Parents from Ifton Heath Primary School and Rhyn Park School and Performing Arts College have received letters from Shropshire Council explaining the merger process and warning the posts would be declared redundant.

The letter goes on to suggest that there was no reason staff could not then go on to employment with the newly formed school.
