Lembit Opik received £42,000 golden handshake
Wednesday 2nd March 2011, 2:59PM GMT.
Former Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik received a £42,000 golden handshake after being ejected from his constituency by voters, it was revealed today.
Mr Opik was among 221 departing MPs who shared £6.8 million. Forty five of those claimed more than £40,000 with the maximum payment of £42,732 being claimed by just seven former parliamentarians, including Mr Opik.
The six other MPs who claimed the maximum were Roger Berry, Michael Jabez Foster, Julie Morgan, Christine Russell, Phil Willis and Tony Wright.
However, MPs’ claims for second home expenses slumped by more than a third in the wake of the scandal that engulfed Westminster, it was disclosed today.
