Wellington ‘cenetery’ mistake will be buried
Tuesday 1st March 2011, 3:59PM GMT.
Visitors to a Shropshire cemetery could be forgiven for thinking they were seeing things after sign makers for the burial ground made a grave error.
Drivers looking for Wellington Cemetery are instead being directed to Wellington “Cenetery” after sign makers failed to spell it correctly.
The road sign in Haygate Road, opposite Linden Avenue in Wellington, was only put up Friday. Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said the authority would now be sorting out the sign with the correct spelling.
“The sign was manufactured incorrectly by the council’s signing contractor,” said Mr Griffin.
“The sign was installed on Friday and we had not completed our on site checks before the misspelling was reported to the council on Monday. We have made the contractors aware of the mistake and they arranging for a replacement to be installed as quickly as possible,” he added.
But this is not the first time sign designers in Telford have got the letters wrong.
Drivers approaching the Jiggers roundabout last year were invited to turn left for “Horeshay” instead of Horsehay.
The error was stopped by eagle eyed Shropshire Star reader Dave Fletcher who said the new sign was “another great example of incorrect spelling” by the council.

This is so common now that I wonder if these signs are being made cheaply abroad in a country where English is not the first language. Even so, they must pass through a few literate hands here before being erected. Does nobody accept responsibility for quality control these days?

Another eagle eyed Shropshire Star reader has spotted that it was the Councils contractor, and not the Council that made this.
But why waste the opportunity to bash the Councils?
