One of the main routes into Bridgnorth will have to be resurfaced just months after enhancement work was carried out.

Shropshire Council said there was a defect in the material used in Whitburn Street, which had caused sections of the surface to deteriorate.

Now contractors will return to carry out more work to the road and nearby High Street.

Both will be closed on two consecutive Sundays from this weekend.

Keith Jones, senior highways engineer, said: “Works to enhance Whitburn Street and High Street in Bridgnorth were completed in November 2010, as part of a wider scheme to improve the look and usability of this important town centre.

“Unfortunately, sections of the new road surfaces have started to prematurely deteriorate and will need to be replaced as soon as possible.

“Replacement works will require the roads to be closed on two consecutive Sundays — March the 6 and 13.

“The two roads will not be closed at the same time and access will be maintained at all times for pedestrians,” he added.

“As this has been caused by a defect in the material, replacement costs will be met by the council’s supplier.”
