Shropshire chaos as rail strike by drivers continues

Strike action by train drivers serving Shropshire and Mid Wales over pay was continuing today.

The industrial action by Arriva Trains Wales means there is likely to be disruption until tomorrow as no alternative transport is being laid on by bosses.

The company said some of its drivers had turned up to work yesterday and it was able to run a limited service.

Managers have offered a 12 per cent rise over two years but union bosses have accused the company of paying Welsh drivers less than their English counterparts.

Services affected include the Aberystwyth to Birmingham International route via Machynlleth and Shrewsbury.

Hundreds of commuters faced rush hour chaos across Montgomeryshire today.

An Arriva Trains Wales spokesman said: “Aslef, the train driver’s trade union, is in dispute with the company over pay and have announced a strike day and an overtime ban.

“We are disappointed with their decision, however we are working to resolve the situation.

“Passengers are advised to make alternative transport arrangements. Arriva Trains Wales will not arrange road transport for the affected dates.”

An Aslef spokesman said: “We regret the disruption to the service and our passengers but we would not have staged the strike if there had been any alternatives.”
