Street party planning gets off to a slow start

Just nine street parties have been applied for in Shropshire for the royal wedding, resulting in one council extending its deadline for applications.

Only two streets in the Telford & Wrekin borough have applied to permission to hold a party. Bosses at the council today said they would extend the date for applying until March 18.

Meanwhile, party organisers in the rest of the county have fared no better with Shropshire Council getting just seven applications to close streets for the April 29 event.

The wedding is expected to be watched by millions across the world and royal commentators had expected a huge turnout for street parties.

Councillor Adrian Lawrence, cabinet member for environment and rural area at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “The council has now extended its deadline for  royal wedding street party applications until the March 18 and will not charge for road closures.

“We would welcome any fresh applications to celebrate the royal wedding.”

Ron Buzzacott, head of technical services at Shropshire Council, said: “To date we have received seven applications for road closures on April 29.

“There will be no charge for closures for events and information about applying for a road closure for an event is available on the council website.

“Anyone wishing to organise a street party would first need to apply for a road closure.”
