This week’s Pictures from the Past – Feb 25

Friday 25th February 2011, 11:29AM GMT.

Lovers of Shrewsbury heritage who are of a sensitive disposition should look away now. Because this photo, loaned to us by Bob Hanley, of Telford, shows the destruction of one of the landmarks of the town, the Raven Hotel in Castle Street. Demolition of the building began in the summer of 1960 and lasted several weeks. A Woolworths store was built on the site. On the left is Whitfields, which was for sale at the time this photo was taken.

Our regular Pictures From The Past look at days gone by in Shropshire.

    The Original Jake

    Love those gothic windows.

Interesting to see there appears to be nothing protecting passers by from the demolition work going on overhead.

    Old Salopian

The buildings that replaced the hotel are now ripe for demolition – indeed, they have been ever since they were built.

That said, given the utter shambles going on at the old Telephone House in Smithfield Road, thanks to our shower of a local authority, perhaps we should be careful what we wish for…

The Victorians did the most damage to our mediaeval heritage and road building such as Thomas Telford’s road cutting right through the Abbey to Holyhead and railways have done their bit too!
