Severn Trent Water bills to rise by £16

Water bills in Shropshire are set to rise in line with inflation, but will be among the lowest in the country over the coming year.

While the average bill across England and Wales is set to rise by 4.6 per cent, about £16, to £356 over the coming year, householders in Shropshire will be paying an average of £311.

Martin Kane, customer relations director for Severn Trent Water, said: “Over the next year we’ll invest about £1.3 million a day to upgrade our assets and deliver the service improvements our customers have told us are important to them.

“As well as this substantial investment, our average household bills will stay the lowest in England and Wales.”

Water regulator Ofwat last year set out pricing structures up until 2015, meaning price rises are likely to be in line with inflation until then.

With inflation at 4.7 per cent and water prices rising by 4.6 per cent, customers have effectively seen a 0.1 per cent fall in prices, while Severn Trent has also vowed to keep future increases low.

The firm is also to invest in its services. Nationally, water companies are set to spend £22 billion on improving services up until 2015, including £3 million upgrading sewage pumping stations in Shropshire and a £1.4 million flood alleviation scheme in Victoria Fields in Oswestry, and replacing the town’s water mains.
