Newtown meeting calls for halt to health plans
Friday 25th February 2011, 11:29AM GMT.
Hundreds of people packed into a public meeting in Mid Wales in opposition to plans to shake up health services in one of the biggest shows of strength the town has ever seen.
It was standing room only as nearly 400 people packed into the Elephant and Castle in Newtown last night to voice their concerns at plans to reorganise Shropshire health services.
Children’s and women’s specialities are being proposed to move from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to Telford’s Princess Royal.
Residents, councillors and politicians united as one voice to call for the plans to be scrapped, despite health chiefs claiming there is no other option and the services could be lost if no action is taken.
Russell George, town and county councillor for Newtown, said he was delighted with the response.
He said: “It was an amazing turn out of between 350 and 400 people, more than I can remember there ever being at a public meeting in the town.
“The number of people the meeting attracted just demonstrates the strength of feeling in Newtown towards these proposals.
“I can’t remember a meeting where so many people turned out and had their say.
“The proposals should be shelved and new options should come forward with emergency services located in the centre of the Mid Wales and Shropshire area – Shrewsbury.
“It seems to me that those behind the proposals forgot about Montgomeryshire when they were putting them together.
“The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is vitally important to people here too.”
The move would add up to 20 minutes onto a journey which already takes 45 minutes from Newtown.
Glyn Davies, Montgomeryshire MP, said people in Mid Wales did not want any services moved and the “highly charged” audience made its point.
He said: “It was another amazing public meeting about Shropshire hospitals in Newtown.
“There were nearly 400 there, so that’s 800 at three public meetings – and 800 people saying the same thing,” said Mr Davies.
“We do not want any of our ‘emergency’ services, including maternity and paediatrics, being moved to Telford.”

Welsh health is the responsibility of NHS Wales. The Welsh Assembly and Executive took on this responsibility in 1999 under devolution.Every Welsh person has a local Welch District General Hospital to use.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS trust is part of NHS England -a different organisation entirely !!

Mikey, they pay for the services they get at Shrewsbury hospital and should, like everyone else have a say. The hospital doesn’t have enough money as it is, so to turn it away seems stupid.

If they aren’t entitled to comment on these ward closures then I’m sure there wouldn’t have been a meeting in Newtown Mikey! Would you really be happy to see thousands of people without hospital care?

The financial arrangements are opaque – but appear to be akin to paying for the petrol for using the car, but not sharing the purchase cost, insurance, or road tax
- and (f course) expecting the car to be on your drive.

I don’t think there is DGH for Powys, that is why they come to RSH.

The new road layout in Newtown has easily added 20 minutes to travel times – about the journey time between our two hospitals
Wouldn’t some (long overdue) investment in roads – say dualling the Shrewsbury – Welshpool road and building the Newtown bypass save the extra journey time – and benefit every other traveller and the Powys economy to boot?

shrewsbury gets paid for every patient they see from mid wales, this is our closest hospital to us here in newtown. we are fully entitled to have a say and say we are not happy about these changes they are trying to make,

Mikey do you not think the people of Newtown would not prefere to have a local hospital that could deal with all our health and emergency needs, yet we dont have that choice.our children and eldery are put at enough risk by having to travel to Shrewsbury hospital let alone Telford, why should we not have our say and are we less important I for one dont think so.
