A campaign group has been launched to fight plans to build five luxury homes near Ludlow’s 800-year-old St Laurence’s Church.

The Stop the Blot campaign includes members of Ludlow Civic Society, Ludlow Town Council, St Laurence’s Parochial Church Council and residents angry at plans to build on land behind 9-10 King Street.

Organisers are looking into the possibility of launching a judicial review against a decision to allow the homes to be built by St Laurence Homes made by Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee.

They are also considering a formal complaint to the council over a decision to refer the matter to the strategic planning committee after the authority’s south planning committee opposed the plans.

Civic Society chairman John Nash said: “We are getting calls from people all over the country who are upset at what they feel is a travesty of democracy.”

Ian Kilby, head of development management at Shropshire Council, said: “The proposal was referred to the strategic planning committee because in the opinion of planning and legal officers the committee’s resolution to refuse the application might not be defensible if challenged and result in compensation or damages being available or claimable under a statutory provision.”

How much will a judicial review cost the tax payer?
Would there be so much up raw if the houses were planned to built in the sandpits area of Ludlow. Think some councillors have their priorities wrong in these days of financial instability.

Am I missing something here – there is an extant planning permission on the site so if the current application (which I think is better than the one with permission which was granted on appeal) is turned down on appeal surely they will just build to the old permission!

better late than never, this should have been organised a year ago. it is obvious common sense goes out of the window where shropshire planners are concerned
as i have said before, i do hope the mp is onside in this matter, he needs or someone needs to call in the government department to review this cretinous decision by scc

the main objections are surely the effect these new properties will have on 2 grade 1 listed buildings and the shadows on historic ludlow parish church stained glass east windows.
besides the despoilation of an historic site in ludlow there is the small matter of access to the site by builders. every bit of building material brought in by wheel barrow or can it be hoisted. either way builders lorries are going to be a continual hazard in king st or corve st while loading and unloading.

i wish the new group every success, and i for one was very proud to have lived and been educated in ludlow in the 1950′s and i return several times a year to renew acquantencies.

it is high time the palmers guild were reborn. i can still remember parts of their prayer i was taught at the grammar school 55 years ago.
“except the lord build the house, they that labour, labour in vain” it was good 1200 years ago, it is certainly spot on now
