£50,000 Shrewsbury drug seizure
Friday 18th February 2011, 1:39PM GMT.
Illegal drugs with an estimated street value of about £50,000 were seized from a home in Shrewsbury today during an early morning raid by police.
Nine officers carried out a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a flat in Moneybrook Way, Meole Brace shortly after 8am.
Police said they forced entry into the property and found 27 mature cannabis plants and a quantity of what is believed to be dried cannabis buds. Associated equipment and cash were also seized, police said.
Detective Sergeant Keith Steele, who led the police team, said a growing environment was found in a bedroom. He said a 49-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody at Shrewsbury police station on suspicion of cultivating cannabis. He was still in custody today awaiting questioning.
Mr Steele said: “Today’s warrant is part of the ongoing Operation Ranch which was launched in December to develop intelligence into the growing of cannabis bush in Shropshire.
“We are having considerable success in identifying locations where cannabis is being grown. We do need support from people living in our communities who can supply us with information about illegal drug activity.”
Details should go to Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000, or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
