Summer date for Shrewsbury incinerator public inquiry
Thursday 17th February 2011, 11:00PM GMT.
A public inquiry to decide on controversial plans to build a £60 million incinerator in Shrewsbury will take place in the summer, it was revealed today.
A report to today’s meeting of Shropshire Council’s strategic licensing committee confirmed a hearing would take place.
Members of the committee rejected Veolia’s plans for the burner, earmarked for Battlefield, in September last year but the authority’s full council later agreed to back an appeal by the firm.
Councillors went against the recommendations of their officers in throwing out the plans last year, claiming it was unacceptable to have a mass burner as it had been excluded in the local waste plan.
The committee also felt it would have a negative impact on the visual landscape with an incinerator next to the historically significant Battlefield site.
The report says: “An appeal has now been lodged in respect of the decision to refuse planning permission and as with the application, significant public interest in the consideration of the appeal is anticipated.
“The appeal will be heard by public inquiry.
“No date has yet been set but it is likely to be in the summer this year.
“The local planning authority’s role is to defend the decision of the strategic planning committee. In doing so officers will be required to make decisions in respect of the where and how to apply resources regarding the reasons for refusal.
“Although these decisions would ordinarily be taken by planning officers in accordance with the constitution, on this occasion as this was a member decision, it is considered desirable for there to be member involvement in these decisions.”

this is a complete balls up by the council, being sued by its own waste department? right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing etc what an absolute mess
its the legacy of browns pfi contracts, they are stuck with a contract to build something that they can no longer afford, its like the aircraft carriers, they cant get out of the contract, they will have to build it and then scrap it straight away

It’s not Shropshire Council’s waste management team appealing it’s Veolia Environmental Services, so luckily not the council going against itself which I would agree would be stupid.

why should the democratic will of the people be overturned, we dont want this here, its not safe, its not green and its not right, we should introduce more recycling services instead they work out cheaper in the long term and create more jobs and carbon saving than a burner ever would

The appeal and the public inquiry will generate a huge amount of local interest in how decisions are taken in Shrewsbury.
