Controversial plans for five luxury homes in the shadow of Ludlow’s St Laurence’s Church have today been given the go-ahead.

Members of Shropshire Council’s Strategic Planning Committee approved the application, for land behind 9-10 King Street, by just one vote this afternoon.

More than 120 people packed into a meeting at Ludlow Assembly Rooms while another 30 listened via speakers on the stairs outside.

The plans were thrown out last month by members of the authority’s South Planning Committee.

As a result of that decision they were referred up to the Strategic Planning Committee.

Andrew Sheldon, of developers St Laurence Homes, said he believed the project would enhance the area and said work could begin as early as the summer.

Campaigners will meet to discuss their next step over the next few days.

One of the campaigners, Joyce Brand, said: “This is far from over.”

Not surprised by this. Shropshire council never listen to local opinion in planning decisions.

shropshire council should hang their heads in shame. previous councillors ripped the medieval heart out of shrewsbury in the 1960′s, 50 years later ludlovians will not stand by and see the heart of ludlow altered.
these plans are too complicated for the simpletons of shropshire council and doubtless the cecretary of state for the environment will want to call in these plans for reconsideration. the mp for ludlow appears silent on these plans.

time for all ludlovians proud of their ancient borough, to stand up and reject the simpletons of shropshire council who have made an apalling decision.

Shropshire Council should be ashamed of themselves. Ludlow is a beautiful medieval market town and does not need luxury new homes that I expect will come with remote control gates and do nothing for the town or the people who live there and care about it. It will take the heart out of the town. I am very proud to be an old Ludlovian and it is a pity that some members of the Council aren’t of the same ilk.

well said ruth rigler, i am proud to be an old ludlovian, this is a terrible decision, and i do hope ludlovians are fighting this cretious decision. successive shropshire plannners have no sense of history either in the county town or the historic borough of ludlow.. good luck ludlovians in fighting this. i do hope your mp is onside as so far his silence is deafening

let us name the councillors who voted for these plans and ensure they are opposed at the next election and removed. it is the only way these cretins can learn from their idiotic mistakes
