Four are banned from south Shropshire pubs
Thursday 17th February 2011, 2:39PM GMT.
Four people have been banned from pubs across rural parts of south Shropshire after a fight broke out in a bar on New Year’s Eve.
The orders handed out by members of Craven Arms Pubwatch include three “indefinite” bans and an order barring another person from pubs and licensed premises in the area for one year.
Richard Sys, chairman of Craven Arms Pubwatch, said the group was sending out a strong message that criminal and anti-social behaviour in pubs would not be tolerated.
None of those banned have been named and a police probe in to the events at the Craven Arms Hotel on December 31 is ongoing.
A brawl involving about 10 people broke out at the pub and spilled out on to the streets, leaving a woman and a teenager injured.
Mr Sys said members had based their actions on testimonies taken from people who witnessed the incident.
He said: “We are trying to create a safe and pleasant environment for people to drink in and we will not tolerate criminal behaviour in our pubs. We hope this will enforce that message.”
Kelly Harris, Pubwatch coordinator for Shropshire, confirmed the bans had been enforced but said police inquiries were still ongoing.
Craven Arms Pubwatch has 11 members and has a catchment stretching to Clun and Munslow.

Well done more licensed premises should do this to punish trouble makers as the law will not. Stick together and send out a strong message that violence will not be tolerated in our public houses

Thanks “jeffb” for your support. I’ve had a few similar phone calls to my own pub (I’m from the Plough in Wistanstow).
Some of the bans we have imposed collectively may seem harsh, however, ALL of us in Craven Arms Pubwatch are keen to send a message that our pubs are safe, we don’t want trouble-makers and we don’t put up with criminal behaviour whether it is assault, drug-related or as simple as buying alcohol for under-age drinkers.
And we are now working with neighbouring Pubwatch Schemes, so no longer does a ban in say Ludlow mean you can push the problem onto Craven Arms; we also vote on other neighbouring bans and whether to impose them in our area. As Pubwatch schemes expand, troublemakers will have to travel a long way to find a welcome!

how can pubwatch make a decision when they have not heard the other side of the story In a court of law INNOCENT TILL PROVEN GUILTY
you ban 4 not being funny but you should ban 10
one rule 4 one and 1 rule 4 another

In reply to “Top Hotel Local”
There are a couple of points here:
1. We work independently of any criminal proceedings, and since that can take a long time, we act as soon as we can. We can always reverse a ban if new information comes to light! (or equally impose others)
2. The Group as a whole can only act on those names that are brought forward by a licencee. And then it is presented as “A did this to B and C interverened….” it is only after we decide on bans that the names are revealed so as to remain as impartial as possible.
I must stress that we can only act on the information/persons presented to us by the licencee of the pub where a problem has occured.
At that particular meeting, I did ask if there were any other names to be added and at that point, there were not, either because the licencee didn’t know the names, or that the necessary information (CCTV etc) hadn’t yet been gathered, or the licencee didn’t feel that any others warranted bringing to pubwatch. It was agreed that temporary bans would be put in and everything reviewed at the following meeting (if investigations had completed)
To a large degree this is somewhat irrelevant now as the pub in question has had its membership of Pubwatch terminated by the rest of the group.
By all means contact me at my pub and discuss it.
