Burrowing badgers blamed for Bucknell road problems

Burrowing badgers have forced the closure of a road near the south Shropshire border after a large hole appeared in the carriageway.

The unclassified road in Willey, near Bucknell, was closed yesterday afternoon by contractors working for Herefordshire Council after part of the carriageway collapsed.

And it could be closed for up to six weeks if the badgers are still living in a nearby sett. Badger sites must be inspected and carefully moved if they are still in use and consultation over moving the sett could take several weeks.

The route is closed between Willey Chapel and Willey Lodge. Diversions have been clearly signposted.

Alison Grange, press officer for Herefordshire Council, said: “A large hole in the middle of the carriageway has been discovered which has been made safe but remains very dangerous to road users.

“Badger sites need inspecting to assess if the site is live.”
