Telford & Wrekin Council in budget rewrites
Wednesday 16th February 2011, 7:49PM GMT.
Council chiefs in Telford look set to rewrite parts of their budget after hundreds of residents called for changes to be made.
Telford & Wrekin Council will see £13.6 million axed from its Government grant next year but has vowed to freeze council tax and not cut the roads budget.
The council has been told it will lose £25 million in Government funding over the next four years.
Initial proposals, which must be decided by early March, called for a £60,000 spending cut on footways, roads and kerbs.
But council bosses today announced the money could be left where it is after consulting with more than 800 residents and a range of groups across Telford.
A free pest control service, which was told it would be scrapped, will now stay in place although home-owners will have to pay.
Council bosses also looked at saving cash by bringing forward the time of concessionary bus travel from 9am to 9.30am. It is now intended to stay at 9am.
Flex Cards, giving discounts at leisure facilities and other services, were previously free but will now be charged from April.
The council now proposes to start charging for delivery of new and additional grey bins. Stolen, vandalised or damaged bins would not be charged for.
The budget proposals will be discussed at the council’s cabinet on Tuesday.
