Stars gathering for Pete Postlethwaite

Double Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis and double Oscar nominee Julie Walters were this afternoon due to lead mourners paying tribute to Shropshire actor Pete Postlethwaite.

A memorial was taking place at St Leonard’s Church, in Shoreditch, London, to the late Mr Postlethwaite, who died on January 2. Today would have been his 65th birthday.

He died in Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after losing his battle with cancer.

Hundreds of people were gathering at the church, which has links to the acting community, to pay their last respects.

Mr Postlethwaite, who lived in Shropshire for more than 20 years, was one of Britain’s greatest actors and received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Guiseppe Conlon in In The Name of the Father.

The actor Daniel Day Lewis, who starred alongside Mr Postlethwaite in that movie, as Guiseppe’s son, Gerry, was this afternoon due to lead the tributes to Mr Postlethwaite.
