Council chiefs today said they have received four separate offers for a multi-million pound site in Shrewsbury earmarked for more than 100 homes.

The former Tesco site in Arlington Way was put up for sale on the open market in November after lying vacant for nearly four years.

Shropshire Council officials had said the Harlescott site could be sold under a pilot initiative designed to speed up the development of new homes. But the land was instead put up for sale for more than £4 million.

Richard Benson, from Shropshire Council, said: “We have received final offers and that’s going to be the subject of a confidential report to cabinet in March.

“We have received four firm offers and they do vary in price.”

He said the authority’s cabinet would decide which offer to accept at its meeting on March 16.

The site already has planning permission for 101 homes, with hopes for about 35 affordable units.

It has been empty since Tesco left the area in spring 2007 to move to a £15 million Tesco Extra store in Harlescott.

The council took ownership of the land following a land swop deal between the former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and Tesco in 2007.
